“Youth and status of mind!”

Social Networks……I think this is something I should talk about!

“Youth a state of mind? or Youth a status of mind?” – Gareth Pitman

The main social network that everyone uses is Facebook. The other include Twitter, MySpace and Bebo, all the others don’t matter!

Everyone in class I think now knows me to have a hatred for Facebook. I have this hatred for Facebook because it has gone beyond a socializing network. It has gone beyond this and has become and can be used for a spying and stalking tool. Sound stupid but everyone does it. You can find out more about a person from there Facebook page on first meetings than you can if you meet them in person. I think this is stupid, there is no better way of communicating with someone other than in person, you can’t beat it. But youth now would rather communicated through Facebook, texts, webcam. No wonder there was news about the an increase in obesity, add-on gaming consoles it doesn’t help, other than the Nintendo Wii which is trying to get you up and working.     But anyway back to Facebook! Another belief that people start believing in with Facebook is that there is a competition with the friends to see who can get the most friends and this leads to people thinking that they actually have 500 or more friends, which is just plain stupid. The statistics that Facebook themselves publish say that out of all your friends 150 of them you will know max, so for anyone to believe they know all of there 500 or so friends is ridiculous.

“Good friends, you can count them on one hand” – lyrics from Mr Hudson

Here are a few more facts and figures that Facebook publish:

  • Average user has 130 friends on the site
  • Average user sends 8 friend requests per month
  • Average user spends more than 55 minutes per day on Facebook
  • Average user clicks the Like button on 9 pieces of content each month
  • Average user writes 25 comments on Facebook content each month
  • Average user becomes a fan of 4 Pages each month
  • Average user is invited to 3 events per month
  • Average user is a member of 13 groups
  • More than 400 million active users
  • 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
  • More than 35 million users update their status each day
  • More than 60 million status updates posted each day
  • More than 3 billion photos uploaded to the site each month
  • More than 5 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each week
  • More than 3.5 million events created each month
  • More than 3 million active Pages on Facebook
  • More than 1.5 million local businesses have active Pages on Facebook
  • More than 20 million people become fans of Pages each day
  • Pages have created more than 5.3 billion fans

“It’s not official until it’s on Facebook!”

This is a saying going around about Facebook at the moment, it relates more to your relationship status but also can relate in general. If you are in a relationship and you both know that you are in a relationship together and it’s not on Facebook, it doesn’t exist and it isn’t true! Thats how pathetic it has become and this can be related to general stuff too, for example parties, if your not on the Facebook list for attending or a maybe then why are you there?!?!

Do you own your photos and details? There was big news when people found out that they were giving Facebook the right to all there photos when loading them on to Facebook. This has now been sorted so that they do not own any of your photos, but it makes you think what else was in the small print.

So is “Youth a state of mind? or a status of mind?” Let me know what you think.
